Extinct flying reptile of the order
Pterosauria, existing in the Mesozoic age.
Pterosaurs were formerly assumed to be
smooth-skinned gliders, but recent
discoveries show that at least some were
furry, probably warm-blooded, and may have
had muscle fibres and blood vessels on their
wings, stiffened by moving the hind legs,
thus allowing controlled and strong flapping
flight. They ranged from starling size to the
largest with 17 m/50 ft wingspan.
